September Guild Meeting and WEEKEND WEAVING WORKSHOP

We have a special workshop going on the first weekend of September.

Jennifer will do a short presentation at our Saturday morning meeting as part of her visit. The Saturday meeting will be 9:30-11:30 at San Antonio Village Community Center.  See newsletter for details.  This is a new location though we have met there before.

The workshop itself is three days!  Sept 1,2,3

“Double Rainbow: 2 Layers, 4 shafts, Infinite Possibilites”

With Jennifer Moore http://www.doubleweaver.com/

This is perhaps the ultimate color sampler! You will begin by winding a warp and setting up your loom according to Jennifer’s system for working with multiple colors in a rotational sequence and bringing it to the workshop. A basic twolayered structure will enable us to mix and match our colors, creating an amazing array of color mixtures. As you weave, and your warp colors move past each other, you will experience a visual feast of iridescence and moiré patterns. We will also experiment with single-layered structures such as warp rep and warp-faced twills and the effects that they create on this versatile warp. This sampler will provide a remarkable education in color theory and how optical mixtures work in weaving, as well as a great source of inspiration for future weaving projects.

Level: Intermediate. No prior experience in doubleweave is necessary, but students must know how to warp their loom.

Students will bring a 4-shaft table or floor loom warped according to instructions.

Fee: $150 for guild members, $200 for non-members.

Contact Lena Scharfeld via the CONTACT page to sign up. Your message will be forwarded to her.

February Guild Meeting!

Everything You Wanted to Know About Paper But Didn’t Know Who to Ask

Our guest speaker Is Jill Littlewood.  For forty years, Jill has been exploring different parts of the book!  With a degree in drawing from the Art Institute in Chicago, she later studied letterpress printing at the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. Scientific illustration for the Natural Museum In Los Angeles followed, along with Western and Chinese caliigraphy, bookbinding, and finally papermaking.  Some of her works push the line between book art and illustrations: they are books you walk through, entirely made of handmade paper, with hundreds of her illustrations and writings embedded in them.  Most recently Jill had been making sculptural pieces out of her handmade paper.

This is our regular Saturday meeting format at Valle Verde, in the Ray Schneider Social Room inside the Adminstration Building, 900 Calle de los Amigos, Santa Barbara, CA 805-883-4000
