February Guild Meeting!

Everything You Wanted to Know About Paper But Didn’t Know Who to Ask

Our guest speaker Is Jill Littlewood.  For forty years, Jill has been exploring different parts of the book!  With a degree in drawing from the Art Institute in Chicago, she later studied letterpress printing at the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. Scientific illustration for the Natural Museum In Los Angeles followed, along with Western and Chinese caliigraphy, bookbinding, and finally papermaking.  Some of her works push the line between book art and illustrations: they are books you walk through, entirely made of handmade paper, with hundreds of her illustrations and writings embedded in them.  Most recently Jill had been making sculptural pieces out of her handmade paper.

This is our regular Saturday meeting format at Valle Verde, in the Ray Schneider Social Room inside the Adminstration Building, 900 Calle de los Amigos, Santa Barbara, CA 805-883-4000

9:30 social hour, 10:00 short business meeting, followed by our speaker!

The world is full of an amazing range of fiber, and people around the globe have always put what is at hand to use for a myriad of purposes. WHY ?  At our July meeting we are doing a dye day!  We will convene at 9:30 for social time and snacks, there will be no raffle so we can get right to work, playing with natural dyes.

More details to come; for now, mark your calendars!

June Guild Meeting

Saturday, June 4th: Dying Around the World with Margaret Carlberg

Margaret Carlberg is a retired chemistry teacher (Connelly
High School, Anaheim, California) where she and students
designed, planted and maintained for 20 years more than 50
garden areas on their 6-acre campus. In 1998, she and her
students became intrigued with natural plant dyes, when she
started experimented extensively with different chemical
mordants. At Coastline Community College, Orange County,

She and her husband Dave moved to Santa Barbara in 2013 and she has been an
active member of the SB Fiber Arts Guild since then.

Being a chemistry teacher, Margaret loves to do experiments, and has done
natural dyeing demonstrations and small-scale workshops at the Huntington

May Guild Meeting

Saturday, May 7th: The California Rug Project with Vicki Frasier
Vicki will discuss her creation of the California Rug:
“Worldwide travel has given Vicki an appreciation of the diversity of cultures. These experiences have directly energized her development as an artist and person. She composes cultural statements utilizing the medium of the hand-knotted rug. Vicki’s studies in rug restoration techniques allow her to bring the ancient methods of spinning, natural dying and rug making, to make the California Rug.”
