May Guild Meeting

Well, today was supposed to be our May Guild meeting, but as with all group activities we had to cancel. Looking ahead we also cancelled our June meeting. We had already planned on taking a break in July as that would have fallen on July 4th.

We hope the situation will be improved so that our Annual Dye Day in the Park in August can take place but who knows?

We fiber artists were totally prepared to Stay at Home and I hope everyone is enjoying working on their projects! We will have a great show and tell when we meet again.

November Guild Meeting – Saturday Nov 2, 2019 Reinstated!

The bus trip that was to replace the Saturday meeting has been cancelled as the minimum participation was not reached. Back to our regular meeting time with a screening of interest!

Santa Barbara Fiber Arts Guild will be having our normal first Saturday of the month Guild meeting on Saturday, November 2, at Maravilla. Our program will be the showing of a portion of the PBS program “Craft in America”, Episode 8, entitled “Threads”.

Please note change of venue:

Maravilla Senior Living Community, 5486 Calle Real, Santa Barbara  — in a different room!  This time we’re meeting in the Club Room and Theater, which are upstairs in the main building, also called the Independent Living building.  It’s the  big two-story building to the left of the Clubhouse.  There’s even a space upstairs with a billiard table that will serve as our raffle table.  The second floor is accessed via stairs and an elevator.   We suggest you try the parking lot to the left as you drive into Maravilla.

THREADS. Explore the creativity of the human spirit through works that begin with the humble thread.

Here is the description of the 60 minute PBS Program:

The Peabody Award-winning series CRAFT IN AMERICA promotes and explores America’s rich craft tradition.  Episode Eight, THREADS, looks at ways in which the needle arts have developed.  Through filmed visits to four nationally acclaimed artists working at the forefront of their media, THREADS documents how the needle arts continue to evolve and influence contemporary culture.

– Faith Ringgold, internationally celebrated artist, teacher and author, creates painted story quilts to bring the proud history of African Americans and Harlem to a new generation.

– Randall Darwall is a colorist in warp and weft. His woven cloth is the palette which he and his partner Brian Murphy transform into woven garments and quilts that inspire and adorn.

– Consuelo Jimenez Underwood incorporates weaving, sewing, painting and applique to produce a proud political statement, presenting her indigenous heritage and questioning the borders that divide nations.

– Terese Agnew creates densely embroidered quilts by a process she calls ”drawing with thread.”  Her themes are environmental and social, going beyond pure technique to tell truths that awaken our sensibilities.

We meet in the Maravilla Clubhouse in Goleta, Address: 5486 Calle Real, Santa Barbara, CA 93111
