SCHOLARSHIP FUND

LaVelle Ure/Lucilla Warren Memorial Educational Grant Fund
Description and Procedures

The Santa Barbara Fiber Arts Guild is a not-for-profit organization that sponsors lectures and workshops on weaving and related fiber arts. The LaVelle Ure Memorial Educational Grant Fund was established in 2004 to honor LaVelle’s, and later, Lucilla’s contributions to the world of fiber arts by supporting further education of other fiber artists and crafts persons.

The Education Grant Fund is supported by donations and from the proceeds of the Fiber Frenzy sales.

Individual recipients
Qualifying courses include, but are not limited to, multi-day workshops sponsored by the Guild, as well as multi-day workshops held before or after Convergence or regional weavers’ conferences. Applications to attend multi-day workshops sponsored by organizations other than these must be accompanied by a brochure describing the event. The grant may also be used for research and studies connected with the fiber arts.

A maximum of $500 may be requested for individual grants. Less may be awarded, depending on the Educational Grant Committee’s assessment and funds available.

Each recipient of an individual grant must agree to make a presentation to the Santa Barbara Fiber Arts Guild within one year after the completion of the study. The aim of the presentation is to share something that the recipient learned in the course of study.

Applicants must be Santa Barbara County or Ventura County residents and at least fifteen years of age.  Individual recipients are not eligible to apply for another Santa Barbara Fiber Arts Guild grant for two years after the original successful application, i.e. recipients are eligible every other year.

Guild group activities
Grant funds may also be used for Guild group activities, i.e. bus rental and entry fees for field trips. The Board may decide by majority vote if grant funds may be used for a group activity.

Community organization support
Organizations offering fiber arts related instruction or educational activities can apply for assistance. This would be a one-time expense (i.e.  for equipment), not for ongoing support.

How to apply
A letter of application or a letter of request for assistance can be sent to the Guild president who will share it with the Educational Grant Committee.  The Educational Grant Committee is composed of the elected officers and the Program Chairperson.

Information submitted will remain confidential and will be used only by the committee. Please send via email if possible. The application letter should be submitted at least two months before the registration deadline of the course or workshop for which financial help is being requested. If the event for which the scholarship money was received is canceled, the recipient must return the money to the Santa Barbara Fiber Arts Guild as soon as possible.
