Our July program celebrates the remarkable legacy of Northern California fiber art with two films from the Bay Area Fiber Artists Archive, a project documenting the lives, work, and influence of exceptional contemporary fiber artists.
Video producer Ellin Klor will introduce the films featuring Kay Sekimachi, Ana Lisa Hedstrom, and Judith Content, then share a behind-the-scenes look at how this important archival series came to life and why it matters.
Since the 1950's, Northern California has been an internationally recognized center of fiber art innovation and education. In 2021, the Textile Arts Council of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco began producing short videos about exceptional living Northern California fiber artists, documenting their lives and work. Entitled the “Bay Area Fiber Artists Archive,” (BAFAA) there are now four videos in the series, with the fifth, on weaver Lia Cook, currently in production.
At the July program two of the videos will be presented by Ellin Klor. “Kay Sekimachi - Perspectives / Art, Legacy & Influence” and “Ana Lisa Hedstrom & Judith Content: Continuum in Cloth / Approaches to Contemporary Shibori.”
