Craft to Art, Art to Craft Panel Discussion

  • Art & Soul 1323 State Street Santa Barbara, CA, 93101 United States (map)

So many textures, so many colors, so many possibilities ..... In this panel discussion at Art & Soul, discover how exhibiting artists who work in concert with the various craft techniques in the repertoire of textiles, approach their work and explore the range of how they think of themselves as artists and as craftspersons.

Artist Panelists:

Barbara T. Booth has developed a reputation for her love of papermaking. She transforms pulp into distinctive art pieces as well as water-colored paper-pulp bowls. Incorporating a variety of plants, flowers, and natural dyes, Barbara's refined techniques result in unique textures and colors that reflect the natural environment.

Tim Cardy is a fiber artist investigating the intersection of material culture, structure, and process. His work integrates historic textile practices with contemporary methods, creating pieces that examine continuity, craft lineage, and the evolution of handmade form.

Kathy Leader writes, “Growing up in Africa profoundly affected my spiritual relationship with the natural world. Using earth pigments and natural fibers, my images of nature convey longing and even beauty in their brokenness: the paradox of fragility and peace at the same time.”

Sherri West is a visual storyteller, inspired by nature, culture, and the issues of our times. Her artwork uses traditional basketry techniques in contemporary sculptural methods. She works with materials ranging from local gathered natural plant fibers to waxed linen thread.
